Parenting Resources Parenting can be a joyful, exhilarating, and challenging experience regardless of whether the pregnancy was planned or not. Below is a brief list of resources for new parents that can help provide support, advice, and supplies once you have given birth. Support for New Parents Brooklyn Young Mothers Collective The Brooklyn Young Mothers Collective provides comprehensive sexuality and reproductive health education, legal information and advocacy support to young mothers and their families in the Brooklyn, NY area. New York State Department of Health The New York State Department of Health offers a wealth of information and resources for parenting, including applications for Child Health Plus insurance, Family Health Plus, Medicaid, and WIC (a program for women, infants, and children to help ensure access to nutritious food and baby formula). Nurse Family Partnership The Nurse-Family Partnership is a national nurse home visiting program for low-income, first-time mothers, their infants and families. These programs are accessible in New York City, Monroe County, and Onondaga County. Room to Grow This organization provides low-income parents with clothes, books, toys, and other supplies for their baby, as well as one-on-one parenting guidance and child-rearing information. Single Parenting Resources: There are many New York-based organizations that offer guidance and support to single mothers. If you are considering starting a family on your own, the following organizations can offer advice, information and a network of support groups. Parents Without Partners This organization offers a range of educational and social activities for single parents who become members including support services such as baby-sitting, clothing, and toys through exchange networks. There are 12 Parents Without Partners chapters in New York State. Single Parent Resource Center This organization provides single parents with information, a network of self-help groups, and other referrals as needed. Single Mothers by Choice This organization provides support and information to single women having children or parenting children alone. |
