Stand Up to HHS
In July, the Bush Administration proposed new regulations to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that would have blurred the lines between abortion and contraception, making it easier for medical professionals to deny women access to the full range of reproductive rights, including birth control. HHS has now proposed a new set of regulations that do not redefine abortion to include contraception, but reaffirm health care professionals' ability to refuse to provide abortion care to women in need. But concerns remain. As NARAL Pro-Choice America has said, this new version fails to give assurances that current laws about abortion will not be stretched to cover birth control, too. We have 30 days to let HHS know that the draft regulation must include explicit language clarifying that birth control is not at risk.
