GOP Presidential Contenders Support Extreme Positions on Reproductive Rights Views Expressed on the Campaign Trail Are Out of Step with New Yorkers, Regardless of Party

"When Republican voters in New York State go to the polls tomorrow, sadly their only options will be to choose between three remaining presidential candidates who are out of touch and out of step with the values of a vast majority of New Yorkers – of any party – on a woman’s right to choose,” said NARAL Pro-Choice New York President Andrea Miller.
"On the campaign trail, the GOP presidential contenders have been practically tripping over each other jockeying for position as the most extremely anti-choice candidate in the race,” Miller continued.
All three remaining candidates vying for the nomination – Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney – agree that Roe v. Wade should be overturned, believe that employers should be able to interfere with a woman’s access to affordable birth control, oppose Title X funding for family planning services, and support a constitutional amendment declaring that life begins at conception, which would not only ban all abortions but also threaten access to birth control for millions of American women.
Recent polling has consistently showed solid support for a woman’s right to choose in New York, including among Republican voters. For instance, in a NARAL Pro-Choice New York survey in 2009, only 15 percent of Republic voters said they thought abortion should be made illegal. Moreover, there is strong bipartisan support for protecting a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her reproductive health, including contraception and abortion, as evidenced by the fact that seven in 10 New York voters – including six in 10 Republican women – support passage of the Reproductive Health Act, a bill now pending in the state legislature.
Today, NARAL Pro-Choice New York launched a website, HeyRepublicansWelcomeToNY.tumblr.com, featuring the long history of bipartisan support for the right to choose in New York. That history dates back to at least 1970, when Republican Assemblymember Constance Cook authored New York’s law to legalize abortion – a bill that passed with a bipartisan majority, was signed into law by Republican Governor Nelson Rockefeller, and made New York one of the first states to legalize abortion in America.
"Regardless of how the nominees, especially the frontrunner Mitt Romney, try to position themselves here in the Empire State, we will be sure to remind New Yorkers of the dangers inherent in the deep chasm between the Republican presidential contenders’ positions and the deep-seated support for reproductive rights that characterizes New Yorkers of all parties,” Miller said.
