Today NARAL Pro-Choice New York announces its endorsement of Kirsten Gillibrand for re-election to the U.S. Senate.
"On every issue that affects the lives, the health, and the pocketbooks of women and families across America, Senator Gillibrand has been fighting on our side,” NARAL Pro-Choice New York President Andrea Miller said. "The distinction in this race couldn’t be clearer. Our senators need to respond to Americans’ real-life needs and reflect New Yorkers’ progressive, pro-choice values. We’re lucky that Senator Gillibrand represents New York, and NARAL Pro-Choice New York is proud to endorse her for another term.”
Last night, New York City attorney Wendy Long emerged as the Republican challenger to Senator Gillibrand. "Long’s positions are downright scary on a range of issues that are essential to the health and wellbeing of the women and families of New York and across America,” Miller said.
Long opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest, thinks Planned Parenthood should be defunded, and has said she would have been the 49th vote in the Senate for the Blunt Amendment, the extreme bill that would have allowed any employer to block women’s access to affordable contraception for any reason. Long has even said that "if Roe v. Wade were overturned tomorrow, no one would even notice.”
"The list of ways in which Wendy Long is an extremist just goes on and on,” Miller said. "Senator Gillibrand, on the other hand, has been squarely on the side of women and families from her earliest days in elected office. Since entering the Congress, she has taken every opportunity to stand up for women by taking true leadership on a full range of vital issues, from the economy to health care to our most basic personal rights.”
"Senator Gillibrand is a 100% pro-choice,” Miller said, citing that Senator Gillibrand has been a bulwark against the anti-choice attempts to defund Planned Parenthood and to eliminate contraceptive coverage, has sponsored legislation to improve women’s access to contraception and basic health care, is a staunch advocate for the Affordable Care Act, has fought for access to reproductive health care for women in the military, and has been at the forefront of the battle for equal pay for women.
"Kirsten Gillibrand is perhaps the strongest ally and champion that women have in the U.S. Senate today,” said Miller. "In a year that’s seen more attacks on women’s basic health care than ever before, her leadership is absolutely essential to keeping the anti-choice, anti-health care extremist agenda at bay.”
