NEW YORK, October 3, 2013—NARAL Pro-Choice New York today announced its endorsement of Bill de Blasio for New York City Mayor, citing his strong, clear track record of advocating for reproductive rights and advancing women’s access to health care in this city.
"Throughout his career, Bill de Blasio has shown his commitment to the women, men, teens, and families of New York City by being a vocal ally and staunch champion of the right to choose and access to the reproductive health care services and information necessary to make that right a reality,” said Andrea Miller, President of NARAL Pro-Choice New York. "His leadership on this issue has been constant, and we are confident that, as Mayor, he will continue to make the health and well-being of New Yorkers a top priority of his administration.”
As City Councilmember, de Blasio co-sponsored landmark legislation to protect women and health care providers from harassment and intimidation by establishing protective zones around reproductive health clinics. As Public Advocate, he strongly condemned anti-choice extremists for using racist billboard advertising to promote their agenda in New York City and he spoke out forcefully against sham crisis pregnancy centers that masquerade as legitimate health care facilities in an effort to lie to and mislead women seeking pregnancy-related counseling and services. He has taken the fight for access to reproductive health care beyond New York City, standing up against anti-choice posturing and attacks in Congress and urging the New York State Legislature to pass legislation enshrining the rights protected by Roe v. Wade in New York State law.
De Blasio returned a 100% pro-choice questionnaire to NARAL Pro-Choice New York and has made his plans to improve New Yorkers’ reproductive health explicit in his policy platform. He is committed to safeguarding reproductive health care providers, protecting pregnant women from the dangerous practices of crisis pregnancy centers, and working with community members and community-based organizations to identify underserved populations and improve their access to reproductive health services.
De Blasio’s opponent, Joe Lhota, in contrast, has refused to clearly state his positions on the full range of reproductive rights and health matters, leaving New Yorkers unsure where he really stands on issues that impact the health and well-being of millions of women, girls, and families across the city. NARAL Pro-Choice New York’s repeated efforts to elicit Lhota’s position and requests that he return a questionnaire have gone unheeded.
"New Yorkers deserve to know that Bill de Blasio is the only candidate for Mayor who has proven his pro-choice values through a solid record of action and clear positions on hard-hitting issues. Joe Lhota has no record, no clear positions, and repeatedly dodges the tough questions,” said Miller. "Being pro-choice is about more than lip service and convenient one-liners. It requires a distinct commitment, true leadership, and explicit action. Bill de Blasio has what New Yorkers expect from their next Mayor, which is why NARAL Pro-Choice New York enthusiastically endorses him and looks forward to working with his administration in the years to come.”
