November 2007

From the desk of Kelli Conlin, President

2008 is a year that will go down in history. Who's ready for a holiday break?

We're looking forward to 2009, when President-elect Obama will take office and Hillary Clinton will assume the role of Secretary of State, exporting all the good she's done for our state to the rest of the world. Here in New York, the new year will bring us a new U.S. senator, a new State Senate session, and the chance to pass several important pieces of legislation, like the Clinic Access Bill and the Reproductive Health Act. Read about all the political cliffhangers we're facing in 2009 with our end-of-year guide to pro-choice politics in New York State.

In 2009 we'll be working with new legislators, loyal allies, and our dedicated supporters like you to make reproductive choice and health priorities in New York State.

From our family to yours, happy holidays.

For Choice,

Kelli Conlin

Happy Holidays!
The entire NARAL Pro-Choice New York staff and Board send our deepest thanks and holiday wishes to you, whose support helps us continue to protect and expand the right to choose in New York.

Guide to New York State Pro-Choice Politics
2008 is coming to an end and bringing with it a series of political cliffhangers in New York State. Recent events might leave you on the edge of your seat, but stay up to date with this end-of-year political guide. Take this holiday break to get a jump start on your New Year's resolution to be more politically informed: With Senator Clinton's nomination to the position of Secretary of State, whom will Governor Paterson choose to succeed her in the Senate?
The New York City Council is considering the Clinic Access Bill. Why do we need it, and what will it do?
  • Read the op-ed about the bill in the New York Metro written by NARAL Pro-Choice New York President Kelli Conlin and New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
  • See how The New York Times describes the new bill.
Believe it or not, State Senate District 11 is still up for grabs. Will the recount continue, and who will win: incumbent Frank Padavan or NARAL Pro-Choice New York-endorsed candidate James Gennaro?
What's going on in Albany? Despite setbacks with the "Gang of Three," NARAL Pro-Choice New York is urging all Democratic State Senators to support Malcolm Smith as Majority Leader.

Be sure to stay tuned in January for updates and resolution to these issues.

Choose Wisely: Holiday Edition
You've still got time for holiday gift-buying, and we can help by bringing you pro-choice, progressive, feminist gift ideas for the whole family.
  • Political Christmas ornaments: Perfect for friends and family who voted for Obama, and perhaps even more perfect for those who didn't vote for Obama, but should have.
  • Lost: Illegal Abortion Stories: This collection of inspiring, compelling, and sometimes tragic stories from women who had illegal abortions in Australia from 1930-1980 will move readers and convince anyone of the importance of making sure that abortion care always remains safe and legal for all women.
  • Morning After Mints: from The Unemployed Philosophers' Guild. NOT to be confused with actual EC (which also might make a good holiday gift; get more info here).
  • Anything by Ann Taintor: You may have seen some of these calendars, notepads, and home goods, but check out the full range of items that pair vintage images with cheeky quotes and subversive messages. Grandma won't know what hit her.

The Ultimate Gift of Choice
STILL looking for one last gift? Why not give the ultimate gift of choice?

Make a year-end donation to NARAL Pro-Choice New York in honor of someone you know and love (or at least like), and help build the future of the pro-choice movement.

In 2009, NARAL Pro-Choice New York will continue to capitalize on the opportunities to pass pro-choice legislation like the Reproductive Health Act, which will make New York a national leader in reproductive rights.

What other gift will help ensure that women across the state, regardless of income or geography, have access to the full range of reproductive health options? It seems like that reindeer sweater just doesn't compare, does it?
