NARAL Pro-Choice New York Vice President of Communications Mary Alice Carr appeared on Friday night's The O'Reilly Factor to express concern about the newly proposed HHS regulations:
As Mary Alice told Laura Ingraham, the HHS regulations, released on August 20, needlessly re-affirm providers' rights to refuse to offer abortion care to women in need.
The first set of regulations proposed by the Bush administration attempted to reclassify birth control as abortion. After pro-choice leaders, advocates and supporters protested -- including NARAL Pro-Choice New York, which stood beside Hillary Clinton to oppose the regulations -- HHS dropped the attempt to explicitly redefine abortion. Nonetheless, the new regulations are still alarmingly vague, and fail to ensure that current laws applying to abortion will not be stretched to apply to birth control as well.
HHS is currently reviewing the over 20,000 that were submitted by the public and will decide how to move forward withthe regulations.
