On George Bush's Reelection
Dear NARAL Pro-Choice New York Supporter,
We have all suffered an overwhelming disappointment. There’s no denying the obvious. We need time to be angry, to mourn our loss, to recuperate from our extraordinary work together. But this cannot not be the end. We simply do not have that luxury.
Today, I ask that you join with me in making this but one chapter of our continuing struggle.
Our work here in New York is as vitally important today as it was before the election, even more so in light of the current federal landscape. If our worst fear comes to pass – the appointment of Supreme Court justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade – New York will be one of the last pro-choice bastions in America. The entire nation will be looking to us for our leadership and example, a beacon for hope and progress during bleak and uncertain times. It will be all the more critical that we redouble our efforts to keep New York resolutely pro-choice, and that we continue working to secure access to reproductive health care services for women all across this country.
We must redouble our commitment to challenge the federal government through state by state activism and leadership. We must protect and expand access to reproductive health care, throughout New York State and far beyond. We will continue our work. We will continue to build our programs where they are needed the most. We will continue our fight. I know that I can count on your continued support.
Again, thank you for all of your hard work and activism. In these momentous times it is helpful to reach back and take comfort in the strength of our predecessors in the struggle for reproductive rights. Against incredible odds they never gave up their quest to ensure reproductive autonomy for every woman in this nation. We must keep the torch of courage lit. In this dark hour for choice we know that the majority of Americans share our beliefs, that our cause is just and we will prevail.
