Statement by Kelli Conlin, Executive Director, NARAL Pro-Choice New York on the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor

“Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was a judicial moderate who respected individual freedom and the right to privacy. She has long been considered the ‘fifth vote’ on Roe v. Wade, consistently upholding and affirming a woman’s right to decide whether or not to have an abortion.

We call on President Bush to look for someone similar to Justice O’Connor when consulting with the Senate. The Supreme Court is a lifetime appointment. The next Justice will likely serve for ten presidential terms. This is time for consensus, not confrontation.”
