NARAL PRO-CHOICE NEW YORK LAUNCHES TELEVISION ADS HITTING GOVERNOR PATAKI FOR PROMISING TO VETO EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION BILL
Tomorrow, NARAL Pro-Choice New York will launch television ads entitled “Hail to the Chief?” making clear that Governor Pataki's announcement that he will veto the Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act (A.116/S3661) is motivated by his 2008 Presidential run and represents a clear flip-flop for a Governor who has always sought to expand access to abortion rights without restriction.
NARAL Executive Director Kelli Conlin noted “The Governor has consistently supported choice in the state of New York. His dead of the night announcement to veto the bipartisan emergency contraception bill is a repudiation of his principles. It is sad that as George Pataki begins a Presidential run he is abandoning any semblance of principle. Our ad reflects what Americans believe: beginning a Presidential run by flip-flopping is no way to gain voters’ confidence.”
The ads commence with an image of Pataki and the White House to the tune of “Hail to the Chief,” noting that many experts believe Pataki must appeal to right wing conservatives in order to gain the Republican presidential nomination. The ads will run in New York on NY1 and Albany cable channels, and in Iowa and New Hampshire, sending a clear message for Pataki on the 2008 race.
Conlin said “Buying advertising time here in New York reflects our longstanding commitment to expanding choice for women in New York. Buying time in Iowa and New Hampshire should send a clear signal to the Governor: Flip-flopping his position on choice is not something voters will take lightly.”
The State Assembly is slated to deliver the Unintended Pregnancy Prevention Act to the Governor on Thursday, so the ads will run this week in all three states.
