NARAL Pro-Choice New York Launches Aggressive Campaign to Secure the Future of Abortion Rights in New York

Posted: 06/13/2007

 Targets Anti-Choice Senators telling them,
“It’s Time to Support New York’s Roe”

NARAL Pro-Choice New York is launching a multi-layered campaign to target anti-choice Senators who are standing in the way of securing the future of abortion rights in New York.

Starting this week, hundreds of activists will be hitting the ground in the districts of five State Senators to educate constituents about their Senator’s opposition to safe and legal abortion and to demand that they support the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protect Act (RHAPP).

In April, Governor Eliot Spitzer announced the Reproductive Health and Privacy Protection Act (RHAPP), also known as “New York’s Roe” which would place the central tenets of the Roe v. Wade decision squarely in to New York State law, securing the future of reproductive rights in our state. Currently, the bill is being blocked by several anti-choice Senators.

Kelli Conlin, President NARAL Pro-Choice New York stated:

“The time has come, not only for this law, but also for these Senators to join us in the 21st century. The vast majority of New Yorkers - their constituents - support Roe v. Wade and the right of a woman and her family – not government – to decide when it is best to have a child. New York needs a Roe of its own and through phone calls, mailings, ads and leafleting we will ensure that these Senators know that their constituents demand this law.”

NARAL Pro-Choice New York’s campaign began this week with ads in newspapers in the Senators’ districts; circulating petitions at fairs, festivals and door-to-door to show the vast support for this law; leafleting at transit stations; and phone banks to thousands of constituents in districts asking them to call their Senators to urge them to support RHAPP.

The campaign will continue during the summer with mailings of tens of thousands of postcards in the Senator’s districts, as well as door-to-door education drives and leafleting.  The campaign will continue until the bill is passed.

The five targeted Senators are: Senator Caesar Trunzo (3rd S.D., Suffolk), Senator Kemp Hannon (6th S.D., Nassau), Senator Carl Marcellino (5th S.D., Nassau/Suffolk), Senator Serphin Maltese (15th S.D., Queens) and Senator Joe Robach (56th S.D., Rochester).
