NPCNY Calls for Study of Potential Reproductive Health Risks Faced By NYC Nail Salon Workers
NARAL Pro-Choice New York Calls for Study of Potential Reproductive Health Risks Faced By New York City Nail Salon Workers NARAL Pro-Choice New York is urging the city and state to bring attention to a growing concern for the potential harmful effects of chemicals used in nail salons, which can affect the reproductive health and general safety of both salon workers and customers. There has been a lack of investigation on the long-term effects of these chemicals, while the number of nail salons in New York continues to grow beyond 3,800. The particular concerns for nail salon workers include reproductive health effects, such as miscarriage, infertility through exposure to chemicals found in nail products, and the transmission of chemicals through the placenta and breast milk. These possible reproductive health risks have gone without notice partly due to a lack of federal regulation of chemicals that are placed in nail products, as well as a lack of studies to examine the reproductive health effects of these chemicals. Kelli Conlin, NARAL Pro-Choice New York President stated: “As a women’s health organization, we are concerned about the potential health risks from chemicals used in nail salons that could pose risks to a woman’s reproductive health, such as miscarriage, fertility challenges, and the transmission of chemicals through the placenta and breast milk. We urge the city and state to investigate this further and initiate more studies towards finding answers so that we can ensure the health safety of nail salon workers and their customers."
