Organization Played Strong Role in Electing a New State Senate

New York, NY: With a decisive and historic win, President Elect Barack Obama achieved a sweeping victory last night, earning a huge mandate in support of a progressive agenda that will benefit all Americans.  After eight years of failed policies and total disdain for reproductive choice, we now have a President who will stand up for women's health.

This call for change resonated in all corners of the state and country, as New Yorkers delivered a crushing blow to the decades-long reign of an anti-choice State Senate.  We elected Joseph Addabbo and Brian Foley to the Senate, two pro-choice candidates whose victories moved the Senate one step closer to making New York’s pro-choice values realities.

“This long overdue defeat of anti-choice extremists Caesar Trunzo and Serphin Maltese—who have voted time and again against women's health—shows overwhelmingly that constituents were tired of officials failing to represent their values,” declared President of NARAL Pro-Choice New York Kelli Conlin. “We toast our colleagues around the country as we savor these important pro-choice victories.  Today is truly a time for celebration; tomorrow, our work together begins anew.”

NARAL Pro-Choice New York played a critical role in Senators Elect Foley and Addabbo’s successes, through targeted mail, door-to-door voter contact, and mail and e-mail outreach. In turning the State Senate from no-choice to pro-choice, New Yorkers have opened the way for proactive, pro-choice legislation in our state.

But far from marking the end of the road for NARAL Pro-Choice New York’s efforts, this election marks the beginning of exciting challenges.

“NARAL Pro-Choice New York looks forward to continuing our partnership with the State Senate in Albany and working with new pro-choice Senate majority leader Malcolm Smith to undo the damage that many years of anti-choice leadership have caused to women's health care access across the country,” adds Kelli Conlin. “Together, we will positively alter the landscape for women's health and reinstate New York as a leader in protecting women's reproductive freedom.”
