NARAL Pro-Choice New York Applauds Assembly for Passing Reproductive Rights Resolution
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 24, 2012 Contact: Tara Sweeney, 917-488-0094 NARAL Pro-Choice New York Applauds Assembly for Passing Reproductive Rights Resolution Statement from NARAL Pro-Choice New York President Andrea Miller We applaud the New York State Assembly for passing resolution K828 to recognize this week as Reproductive Rights and Justice Week in New York. What better way to mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade than to recognize the importance of prioritizing reproductive rights on the state level here in New York. The Assemblymembers who voted to pass this resolution included both Democrats and Republicans, working across the aisle in the true spirit of New York’s tradition of bipartisan support for a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health decisions. As Congress and state legislatures across the country gear up for another round of attacks on women’s access to reproductive health care, and the Republican presidential primary contenders vie for who can be the most anti-choice, it is more critical than ever that New York stands up for its pro-choice principles. This resolution is an important statement of principle but now it's time to turn those core New York values into good New York law by passing the Reproductive Health Act. We need this crucial legislation that will not only stand as a bulwark against the attacks on choice we see across the country, but will improve the lives of New Yorkers by ensuring a woman’s right to make her own reproductive decisions. We thank the Assembly for its actions today in taking this first step to secure reproductive rights and justice for women across the state.
